Ah, Foursquare. Remember when we used to “check in” at every coffee shop, bar, and public restroom just to become the “mayor” of something? Those were the days. But alas, all good things must come to an end, and Foursquare’s City Guides app is officially joining the digital graveyard on December 15th, 2024.
Apparently, the folks at Foursquare realized that people actually use Google Maps to, you know, find places. Who knew?
So, pour one out for the app that let you meticulously document your every move and compete with friends for the coveted title of “mayor” of the local laundromat. It’s a tough loss for those of us who still remember a time before Instagram was the sole arbiter of our social status.
But fear not, fellow millennials, your precious Swarm app is safe… for now. You can continue to digitally announce your presence at every brewery and cat cafe, racking up those badges like it’s 2012.
In all seriousness, the demise of Foursquare City Guides is a bit of a bummer. It was a unique app that captured a specific moment in the evolution of social media and location-based technology. While it may not have stood the test of time, it certainly holds a special place in the hearts of those who remember its quirky charm.
So, long live Foursquare City Guides. May your memory live on in the annals of internet history, alongside MySpace, Vine, and that weird dancing baby GIF.
