Samsung Galaxy Watch can now detect signs of sleep apnea

Good news for those concerned about sleep apnea! Samsung’s sleep apnea feature on the Health Monitor app has received US FDA clearance, making it the first of its kind to be authorized in the market. This means the Galaxy Watch can now detect potential signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea, a common sleep disorder that often goes undiagnosed and untreated.

How it works:

  • Users over 22 who haven’t been diagnosed with sleep apnea can track their sleep twice for over four hours within ten days.
  • The Galaxy Watch monitors blood oxygen levels during sleep and analyzes them to identify potential apnea-hypopnea events.
  • The app offers users a personalized report indicating potential signs of sleep apnea and encourages them to seek medical evaluation if needed.

Why it matters:

  • Sleep apnea causes breathing disruptions during sleep, leading to lower oxygen levels, decreased sleep quality, and daytime fatigue.
  • Untreated sleep apnea can increase the risk of various health problems like heart disease and stroke.

Availability: The sleep apnea feature will be available on the Galaxy Watch series in the US via the Health Monitor app in the third quarter of 2024. No clarity yet on global rollout.
