Oppo Enco Air5 brings budget ANC and long battery life

Oppo has introduced its latest budget wireless earbuds in China, the Enco Air5, priced at 199 yuan, or roughly $29. Positioned as an affordable option in a crowded market, the model emphasizes active noise cancellation and extended battery life without venturing into premium territory. Available in white, black, and purple, the earbuds target everyday users seeking practical features rather than flagship-level refinement.

The Enco Air5 delivers up to 52dB of active noise cancellation across a 5,000Hz frequency range. A triple-microphone setup handles calls, with Oppo claiming it preserves voice clarity even in winds up to 25km/h. Audio comes through 12mm dynamic drivers tuned for enhanced bass and clearer highs, supported by a 10-band customizable EQ, spatial audio, and gaming-specific sound modes. Codec support remains limited to AAC and SBC, which is typical at this price but may disappoint users seeking higher-resolution options available in slightly more expensive rivals.

At 4.3 grams per earbud and 43.5 grams for the compact case, the design prioritizes lightness and portability. An IP55 rating provides adequate protection against sweat and light rain, suitable for workouts or daily commutes. Connectivity includes Bluetooth 6.1 with dual-device pairing for seamless switches between a phone and tablet, plus a 47ms low-latency mode for gaming and video. Additional conveniences encompass in-ear detection, customizable touch controls, remote camera shutter, and AI-powered translation supporting 24 languages.

Battery performance stands out on paper. Oppo rates up to 13 hours of playback per charge without ANC, extending to 54 hours with the case. With noise cancellation engaged, those figures drop to about 6.5 hours and 27 hours total. A 10-minute fast charge promises four hours of use, a helpful feature for quick top-ups. Real-world results will vary with volume, content, and environmental factors, as is common with manufacturer claims across the budget segment.

This launch arrives amid intense competition in sub-$50 ANC earbuds. Recent entries from Motorola and Nubia highlight similar pushes in noise cancellation and design flair, while established players like Soundcore and EarFun often deliver strong value through refined tuning and broader global availability. Oppo’s decision to focus on China initially limits immediate access elsewhere, though past Enco models have eventually reached international markets.

In a broader sense, the Enco Air5 reflects the rapid commoditization of once-premium features. Strong ANC and multi-day battery life at this price point show how far the category has come since the early days of basic true wireless buds. Yet challenges persist: sound signature remains subjective and often bass-forward in budget models, while ANC effectiveness in real environments rarely matches lab figures. Transparency modes, app integration depth, and long-term durability will ultimately determine its staying power against similarly priced alternatives.

For cost-conscious consumers in China, the Enco Air5 offers a solid entry point into noise-canceling audio. Whether it stands out depends less on headline specs and more on consistent everyday performance once users take it beyond the spec sheet.
