OpenAI’s Operator: an AI agent that browses the web for you

OpenAI has introduced Operator, an AI-powered agent designed to carry out multi-step tasks autonomously on behalf of users. Currently in preview mode, Operator is available exclusively to ChatGPT Pro subscribers.

This new tool marks a significant step forward in OpenAI’s pursuit of “agentic AI,” where artificial intelligence can actively perform tasks and navigate the digital world with increasing independence.

Operator possesses a wide range of capabilities, from browsing the web and calculating refunds to identifying specific customer profiles in a sales database. It can even tackle everyday tasks like grocery shopping and sending emails.

On a computer, Operator can interact with various applications and files, including downloading files, merging PDFs, analyzing spreadsheets, and exporting images.

This functionality is made possible by combining the visual capabilities of GPT-4o with graphical user interfaces (GUIs). This allows Operator to “see” the user’s screen through screenshots and interact with it by clicking buttons, typing, scrolling, and more.

OpenAI has implemented several safety measures to address potential risks associated with an autonomous AI agent. Operator is programmed to block harmful or illegal tasks and cannot access websites related to gambling, adult content, or the sale of firearms and drugs.

Furthermore, user interactions are monitored in real-time by automated safety checkers and human review teams to ensure compliance with usage policies.

To prevent costly mistakes, Operator seeks user confirmation before taking actions like submitting orders or sending emails. It is also currently restricted from performing higher-risk tasks such as banking transactions.

As of now, Operator is only available to ChatGPT Pro users in the United States. However, OpenAI plans to expand access to Plus, Team, and Enterprise users over time.

The introduction of Operator builds upon OpenAI’s recent release of “Tasks” for ChatGPT, which allows users to automate tasks like receiving daily news briefs and scheduling reminders.

Together, these features illustrate OpenAI’s vision of transforming ChatGPT into an indispensable tool that can handle a wide range of tasks and streamline user workflows.

Operator’s ability to browse the web and perform complex actions autonomously represents a significant advancement in AI capabilities. As this technology continues to evolve, it has the potential to redefine how we interact with the digital world and automate an increasing number of everyday tasks.
