London-based tech brand Nothing has announced a new messaging app called Nothing Chats, that will bring Apple’s blue bubble chat to Android. The company said that on November 17, it will launch Nothing Chats, powered by the messaging platform Sunbird on the Google Play store.
According to the brand, Nothing Chats will aim “to break down communications barriers related to messaging platform incompatibility and the social stigma that becomes associated with it as a byproduct.”
To do so, Nothing has partnered with Sunbird, an American technology company that specializes in cross-platform Android messaging architecture. In a nutshell, Nothing Chats will enable users to send an iMessage from an Android phone. But in order to deliver this, users need to sign in to an with an Apple ID on the Nothing Chats app, and know that their messages will be handled by both Nothing and Sunbird, putting privacy at the center of the debate, although both companies claim the service is end-to-end encrypted.
The company also released a video on YouTube showing off the new app, with Nothing CEO Carl Pei saying that the app won’t “change the world,” but that they built it in order to “start a conversation.”
If you’re in the US, Canada, UK or EU and have a Phone (2), you can download the Nothing Chats app on the Play Store from Friday. The app is currently in Beta, and Nothing is working to bring Nothing Chats to more places soon.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see Apple’s reaction to this very soon.
