MWC24: The future of phones is flexible, says Motorola

Motorola’s adaptive display concept has made waves at MWC 2024. Following its initial demonstration at Lenovo Tech World last fall, this concept offers a glimpse into a potential future where a single device can seamlessly transform between smartphone and smartwatch forms.

This unnamed Android device features a flexible 6.9-inch FHD+ pOLED display. A magnetic bracelet accessory allows it to become a wrist-worn device, resembling the external window of Motorola’s Razr+. In this mode, it presents glanceable information, such as the time, and users can navigate through basic app functions.

The phone’s adaptability shines further with other configurations. It can form a compact, L-shaped stand for hands-free video calls or photos. When it’s laid on a flat surface like a tent, the screen splits in half, allowing for unique applications like head-to-head gaming.

Motorola isn’t the only player innovating with flexible displays. Samsung showcased imaginative OLED concepts at CES 2024. However, Motorola’s focus on near-production-ready designs sets them apart. The rollable Motorola Rizr, also on display at MWC, highlights the company’s dedication to this area.

While Motorola’s adaptive display concept is still a proof of concept, it offers a tantalizing look at the future of mobile devices. It remains to be seen whether this particular design will reach the market, but Motorola’s efforts push the boundaries of what’s possible.
