At MWC in Barcelona, Google has announced a suite of new features showcasing how AI is transforming its products. From messaging and car experiences to wearables, the focus is on convenience, accessibility, and integration of Google services.
AI-Generated Messaging with Gemini
Google’s Gemini image generation tool, while facing criticism, is finding a new home in Google Messages. Starting this week, the beta feature lets users access Gemini directly within the app (currently English only). This raises questions about the potential for misuse, but could also be seen as offering creative ways to enhance communication.
AI Streamlines Your Drive with Android Auto
Android Auto is getting smarter too. Long text messages will now be summarized, and group chats will have added context, making driving safer without sacrificing information. The feature, first announced last month, also offers quick reply suggestions.
Accessibility in the Spotlight
On the accessibility front, Google’s Lookout app, designed for visually impaired users, now generates AI-powered captions for images that lack accurate descriptions. Globally available in English, this update provides valuable context for navigating the online world. Users can also ask questions about images, thanks to a previously rolled-out AI assistant feature.
Further enhancing accessibility, Google improves screen reader support for Lens in Maps. Visually impaired users can point their phone’s camera and TalkBack will read information about surrounding places and signage.
Productivity and Lifestyle Boosts
For handwritten notes fans, Google now lets you annotate Docs on Android phones or tablets using your finger or a stylus. Customize with different pen styles and colors to highlight important points.
Music lovers rejoice! Spotify now gets the same seamless output switching as YouTube Music. This lets you easily transition your listening from headphones to car speakers and more.
Fitbit users get expanded support, allowing them to pull data from apps like AllTrails, Oura Ring, and MyFitnessPal. This offers greater insights and customization for health tracking.
Wear OS Updates
Wear OS wearers will appreciate the direct access to Google Wallet passes, including boarding passes, event tickets, and more. Plus, get turn-by-turn navigation on your watch via voice command or mirroring phone directions for increased convenience.
