Meta’s AR pioneer joins OpenAI to lead robotics and consumer hardware

Caitlin Kalinowski, the former head of Meta’s augmented reality (AR) glasses division, has announced her move to OpenAI. In her new role, Kalinowski will spearhead the development of robotics and consumer hardware, marking a significant addition to OpenAI’s expanding ambitions.

Kalinowski brings a wealth of experience to OpenAI, having led the creation of Meta’s impressive AR prototype, Orion, which was recently showcased at the company’s Connect conference. Prior to her AR role, she played a key role in developing Meta’s virtual reality goggles for nearly a decade. Her career also includes a stint at Apple, where she contributed to the design of MacBooks.

Bridging the Gap Between AI and the Physical World

In her LinkedIn announcement, Kalinowski expressed her enthusiasm for leading OpenAI’s robotics initiatives and forging partnerships to integrate AI into the physical world. This suggests a focus on developing tangible applications for OpenAI’s cutting-edge AI models, bringing them beyond the realm of software and into the hands of consumers.

Potential Collaboration with Jony Ive

Kalinowski’s arrival at OpenAI coincides with the company’s collaboration with renowned designer Jony Ive, the former chief design officer of Apple. Ive’s firm, LoveFrom, is partnering with OpenAI to develop an AI-powered hardware product. It’s possible that Kalinowski will play a role in this project, potentially reuniting with her former Apple colleague.

OpenAI’s Renewed Focus on Robotics

OpenAI’s recruitment of Kalinowski and its partnership with Ive signal a renewed focus on robotics and hardware. This marks a shift from the company’s previous emphasis on software development. In 2018, OpenAI disbanded its hardware research team to concentrate on software, but now it appears to be re-entering the hardware arena with a renewed vision.

OpenAI’s Expanding Ecosystem

Several companies are already integrating OpenAI’s models into their products. Apple’s upcoming ChatGPT integration for the iPhone is a prime example. Robotics company Figure is another notable partner, utilizing OpenAI’s software to enable natural language conversations with its humanoid robot.

Kalinowski’s expertise in hardware development, coupled with OpenAI’s AI prowess, could lead to groundbreaking advancements in robotics and consumer technology. This strategic move positions OpenAI to further its mission of ensuring that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.
