Mastodon shifts control to non-profit, strengthening decentralized social media

Mastodon, the decentralized social media platform that gained prominence during the initial exodus from Twitter, is undergoing a significant change in ownership. Key components of the platform, including the name, copyrights, and other assets, are being transferred to a newly established non-profit organization.

This move reinforces Mastodon’s dedication to building a more democratic and user-centric social media landscape. By shifting control to a non-profit, Mastodon aims to safeguard its core mission of providing ad-free, privacy-focused online spaces free from corporate influence.

While the ownership structure is evolving, Mastodon assures users that the platform’s core functionality and user experience will remain largely unchanged. The popular public servers, Mastodon.social and Mastodon.online, will continue to operate, and the platform will maintain its commitment to the federated network, allowing different servers to interact seamlessly.
