Instagram has launched a regional campaign highlighting a new form of social connection emerging within its platform: “Trendships.” This term, a blend of “friendships” and “trends,” describes the bonds formed through sharing content like memes, Reels, and GIFs in Direct Messages (DMs).

The platform recognizes how sharing relatable and lighthearted content has evolved into a unique form of communication and bonding across ages. “Trendships” captures how users leverage this content to stay connected with loved ones, express emotions, and engage with cultural trends.

Nada Enan, Head of Communications for the Middle East & North Africa at Meta, emphasizes that “Trendships” is about creating community through shared experiences and interests. It’s about exchanging content that resonates, from humorous memes to motivational Reels, and using these interactions to nurture connections and express shared values.

This phenomenon gained momentum with the introduction of Instagram Reels and has become a significant way for individuals to communicate and engage. With over 3.5 billion Reels reshared daily, it’s clear that users are actively leveraging the platform to connect and share experiences.

To further explore this trend, Instagram has partnered with content creators across the Middle East, Turkey, and Africa to share their perspectives on “Trendships.” These creators are using their unique voices and content styles to showcase how “Trendships” manifest in their own lives and communities.

The #whatsyourtrendship campaign features creators like:

  • Gloria Olorunto (@maraji_)
  • Jesse Adisa (@papeeyah)
  • Büşra Zeynep Çetin (@busrazeynepcetin)
  • Elif Uluğ (@elifulugjp)
  • Hilal Çavdaroğlu (@hilaryhyraa)
  • Primo Baloyi (@primo9teen)
  • Vafa Naraghi (@vafafrica)

These creators will explore the concept of “Trendships” through various mediums, including anime, comics, and sketches, providing diverse perspectives on this evolving form of digital connection.

Instagram’s “Trendships” campaign highlights the evolving role of social platforms in fostering community and redefining communication in the digital age.
