Instagram is reportedly working on a new feature called Community Chats, which will allow users to create and participate in group chats within the platform. This feature, discovered by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, appears to be inspired by platforms like Telegram and Discord, offering a more interactive and community-driven experience.
Community Chats will support up to 250 members and will be open to all users. Creators will have the ability to appoint admins to moderate conversations, ensuring adherence to community guidelines. Instagram will also monitor chats for content violations.

Creators can choose to make their Community Chats exclusive to approved members, similar to gated communities. They can also promote their chats on their profile pages, encouraging wider participation.
This new feature complements Instagram’s existing broadcast channels, which allow creators to share updates with their followers but lack a two-way conversation feature. Community Chats will enable more direct interaction and discussion among creators and their communities.
However, moderation challenges may arise with the introduction of Community Chats. Meta, Instagram’s parent company, has faced criticism for its content moderation policies, and ensuring a safe and positive environment within these chats will be crucial.
The success of Community Chats will depend on effective moderation and the ability to foster meaningful interactions among users. It remains to be seen how Instagram will address these challenges and whether this new feature will enhance the platform’s community-building capabilities.
