Instagram is introducing a suite of new features designed to enhance the experience of its Direct Messages (DMs). The most notable addition is live location sharing, allowing users to share their real-time location with friends and groups for up to one hour.
This feature, currently available in select countries, provides a convenient way to coordinate meetups or keep track of loved ones. Users can also pin specific locations on a map to help guide others to a designated spot. To protect privacy, live location sharing is off by default and can only be shared within private DMs. Only participants in the chat can see the shared location, and forwarding to other chats is disabled.
In addition to live location sharing, Instagram is also expanding its sticker library with 17 new packs and over 300 new stickers. Users can now favorite stickers shared by others for easy reuse in future conversations.
Finally, Instagram is introducing customizable nicknames for DMs. Users can assign nicknames to themselves and their friends, adding a personalized touch to their chats. These nicknames are exclusive to DMs and do not affect usernames elsewhere on the platform. Users can control who has the ability to change their nickname within a chat, with options to restrict it to only themselves or allow those they follow to make changes.
These new features provide users with more ways to connect and express themselves within Instagram DMs, enhancing both functionality and personalization.
