Google’s AI-powered research assistant, NotebookLM, is now officially available for iPhone and iPad, arriving on the App Store a day ahead of schedule. The app brings much of the functionality from the web version to mobile, allowing users to interact with their uploaded source materials in smarter, more flexible ways using Google’s generative AI.
If you’re unfamiliar, NotebookLM works by letting users upload source files—PDFs, text documents, audio files, and more—which Google’s AI then uses to generate summaries, answer questions, build outlines, and even produce educational materials based on the content. It’s a powerful tool designed to assist students, researchers, and knowledge workers in navigating and synthesizing complex information.

On iOS and iPadOS, the experience closely mirrors the web version. Users can create and organize notebooks, upload files through the native file picker, and chat with the AI assistant to ask context-specific questions. The app allows sorting and filtering notebooks by recent activity, title, shared status, or download status. However, some elements like predefined templates for study guides or briefings—available on the web—are absent here. Users can still generate those materials, but they’ll need to ask for them explicitly via the Chat tab.
Where the mobile version stands out is in its focus on audio. From the Chats tab, users can generate audio summaries and podcast-style deep dives that draw directly from their uploaded content. These audio files can be saved locally, which makes them especially useful for offline listening during commutes, study sessions, or while multitasking. Playback controls include speed adjustment, skip controls, sharing options, and standard play/pause functions.

What’s missing in version 1.0 is deeper iOS integration. NotebookLM currently lacks support for App Intents, meaning you won’t find it in Spotlight Search, nor are there widgets, Shortcuts, or Control Center tools linked to the app. Still, the core experience feels polished and offers strong utility, particularly for users who prefer audio-based engagement with dense research materials.
NotebookLM is available as a free download from the App Store, with both free and paid tiers. Users can subscribe via In-App Purchase or directly through Google, depending on preference. More details about the subscription benefits can be found on Google’s official blog.
For anyone who frequently works with long-form documents or wants to turn research into more digestible formats—especially audio—NotebookLM is a welcome addition to Google’s growing suite of AI tools, now right in your pocket.
