Gemini to gain lock screen access and UI refresh on Android

Google’s Gemini AI assistant is poised for a significant upgrade, according to an APK teardown of the latest Google app beta. The update hints at expanded functionality and a redesigned user interface, promising a more streamlined and convenient experience.

Currently, Gemini can respond to “Hey Google” commands for calls and texts, but only when the device is unlocked. The new update suggests that Gemini will soon be able to handle calls and messages even when the phone is locked, similar to Google Assistant.

A new toggle in the settings will allow users to enable or disable this feature. Importantly, Gemini will still require device unlocking for responses containing personal information like Gmail messages, ensuring user privacy and data security.

This enhanced lock screen functionality will allow users to respond to urgent messages or make quick calls without the extra step of unlocking their phones, offering greater convenience and efficiency.

The APK teardown also reveals potential UI changes for Gemini. The floating overlay may become more minimal, expanding vertically as text is inputted, creating a cleaner and less intrusive experience.

Additionally, Gemini extensions may be organized into categories such as Communication, Device Control, Travel, Media, and Productivity. This would improve navigation and make it easier for users to find and utilize the extensions they need.

While these features are not yet confirmed, the APK teardown provides valuable insights into Google’s ongoing development of Gemini. The company appears dedicated to enhancing Gemini’s functionality and user experience, potentially positioning it as a more powerful and versatile AI assistant.

These potential updates suggest a promising future for Gemini, with increased convenience, improved organization, and a more user-friendly interface. It remains to be seen when these features will be officially released, but the anticipation is certainly building.
