ChatGPT now uses past chats for more personalized responses

OpenAI has updated ChatGPT with a broader memory feature that allows the chatbot to reference more of your past interactions to personalize its responses. The change, announced on April 11, extends beyond the existing memory setting, which previously only saved specific user preferences or key details. Now, ChatGPT can automatically reference past conversations—even if users haven’t manually added that information to memory.

The expanded memory capability is designed to help the chatbot deliver responses that feel more relevant and tailored. For example, it may adjust its tone, remember recurring interests, or follow up on previous topics without needing a reminder. This change applies to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users initially, with Team, Enterprise, and Education tiers expected to receive access in the coming weeks.

Despite this enhancement, OpenAI is offering more control over how memory works. Two settings are now available to help users manage what ChatGPT remembers. The first, “Reference saved memories,” allows you to disable the bot’s ability to recall explicit facts you’ve shared—such as your name or communication style. The second, “Reference chat history,” goes a step further by stopping ChatGPT from using the content of prior chats to shape responses. However, even when this is turned off, your conversations will still appear in your chat history unless you take further action.

For those who prefer complete privacy, the “Temporary Chat” option—essentially a private or incognito mode—is also available. This feature ensures the session isn’t saved or used for memory training purposes.

While this update may be helpful for users who frequently interact with ChatGPT for tasks like ongoing projects, writing assistance, or research, it also raises new considerations around data use and personalization. It’s worth noting that the expanded memory feature isn’t currently available in several regions, including the European Economic Area, the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, likely due to local data protection regulations.

Whether you see it as a helpful step toward more useful conversations or a reason to double-check your privacy settings, ChatGPT’s memory update marks a notable shift in how the platform interacts with users over time.
