Google is giving university students in the UAE a relatively generous reason to try its expanding Gemini ecosystem, offering eligible students 12 months of Google AI Plus at no subscription cost. The promotion combines higher Gemini usage limits, AI-powered study features and additional cloud storage, although students will need to verify their eligibility and provide a payment method before getting access.
The UAE is among more than 140 markets covered by the student promotion, which Google announced on August 19. Eligible students have until December 31, 2026 to redeem the offer, making this less of a short-term back-to-school giveaway and more of an attempt to get Gemini embedded into university workflows for an entire academic year.
There is an important distinction for UAE students: the promotion provides Google AI Plus rather than the Google AI Pro subscription offered to qualifying students in the United States. According to Google, AI Plus includes access to Gemini Omni, twice the standard Gemini usage limits and 400GB of storage.
The more interesting part for university students, however, isn’t necessarily the additional storage. Google has increasingly been turning Gemini into something closer to a dedicated study assistant rather than simply another chatbot.
Students can upload lecture notes and course materials and use Gemini’s study tools to create personalised quizzes, organise study plans and identify areas where they may need more revision. Interactive visualisations and study notebooks are also part of Google’s education-focused offering, potentially making the subscription useful across everything from exam preparation to managing large collections of course material.
Gemini can also work with information from a syllabus to help organise upcoming deadlines. With permission, supported features can add assignment and examination dates to Google Calendar. That’s a relatively mundane use of AI compared with generating content, but it could prove more practically valuable for students juggling several modules and deadlines at once.
Getting the free Google AI Plus subscription requires a few steps. Students need a personal Google Account and must complete student-status verification through SheerID. Verification can involve a valid university email address or additional information requested by the verification service.
Google also requires a qualifying payment method during registration, despite the 12-month promotional period carrying no subscription charge. That’s worth paying attention to because the plan doesn’t simply stop when the free year ends.
Once the promotional period expires, Google AI Plus automatically converts to a paid subscription at $4.99 per month, or the equivalent price in the subscriber’s local currency, unless it is cancelled beforehand. Students interested only in the free year should therefore make a note of the renewal date rather than discovering the transition on a later bank statement.
There are other limitations. Gemini’s AI features remain subject to usage caps, even with the higher limits included with AI Plus, while recurring add-ons such as additional upgraded storage aren’t included as part of the student promotion.
The offer arrives as Google and other AI companies increasingly compete to make their tools part of how students research, revise and organise academic work. A year of free access gives students enough time to decide whether Gemini actually improves those routines rather than judging it during a brief trial.
For UAE university students already using Google’s wider ecosystem, the combination of Gemini tools, 400GB of storage and higher limits makes the promotion easy to consider. The main catch is equally straightforward: the subscription may be free for a year, but students need to remember that automatic billing is waiting at the other end.
