Apple’s Image Playground quietly drops promised “Sketch” style

Apple’s Image Playground, an AI-powered image generation tool introduced in June, has lost one of its originally promised features. The “Sketch” style, which was supposed to generate images with a detailed, academic drawing aesthetic, has been quietly removed from the app’s description and functionality.

When Image Playground was first announced as a key component of Apple Intelligence, it was advertised as offering three distinct styles: animation, illustration, and sketch. However, the latest betas of iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2 only include animation and illustration as style options.

Apple has also updated the Image Playground app description, removing any mention of the “Sketch” style. The previously stated description of the style – “The highly detailed and academic Sketch style produces gorgeous drawings on stark backgrounds” – has been deleted.

While the main body of the app description has been updated, a reference to “three unique styles” remains in the introductory text. Additionally, Apple’s website still lists “Sketch” as an available style in its overview of Apple Intelligence features. However, it is likely that these remaining references will be removed soon.

It is unclear why Apple decided to eliminate the “Sketch” style from Image Playground. It is possible that the feature did not meet Apple’s quality standards or that the company has decided to focus on the other two styles for now. Whether “Sketch” or other styles will be added in the future remains to be seen.

As it stands, Image Playground in iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2 will launch in early December with only two style options: animation and illustration.
