Apple Vision Pro to gain dedicated VR controllers in partnership with Sony

Apple is reportedly partnering with Sony to bring dedicated VR controllers to the Apple Vision Pro headset. This move comes after the Vision Pro’s initial release without controller support, which limited its appeal to gamers and contributed to lower-than-expected sales.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has been in discussions with Sony to bring PSVR2 controllers to the Vision Pro. This partnership could allow developers to port VR games to the Vision Pro, expanding its gaming capabilities and attracting a wider audience.

The lack of dedicated controllers was a controversial decision for the Vision Pro, as Apple aimed to differentiate its headset with hand and eye-tracking controls. However, this limited the device’s compatibility with popular VR games and hindered its adoption among gamers.

The addition of VR controllers could address this limitation and make the Vision Pro a more attractive option for those seeking immersive gaming experiences. The PSVR2 controllers are also expected to improve navigation within visionOS, the headset’s operating system, complementing the existing hand and eye-tracking controls.

While the Vision Pro’s M2 chip is capable of running most VR games, battery life remains a concern. Gaming on the Vision Pro might primarily be a tethered experience, requiring the headset to be plugged in for extended play sessions.

This shift in Apple’s VR strategy suggests a recognition of the importance of gaming in the VR landscape. By partnering with Sony and embracing VR controllers, Apple is potentially paving the way for a more robust and immersive gaming experience on the Vision Pro.
