Apple opens 2026 Swift Student Challenge to global submissions

Apple has opened submissions for the 2026 Swift Student Challenge, continuing its annual effort to engage students interested in app development using Swift. The program invites students from around the world to submit an interactive app playground designed to be experienced in no more than three minutes, placing equal weight on clarity, functionality, and presentation rather than technical scope alone.

The submission window is open through February 28. Eligibility is limited to students who are currently enrolled in an accredited academic institution, an officially recognized homeschool equivalent, a STEM-focused educational program, or an Apple Developer Academy. Applicants must not be employed as full-time developers and must meet age requirements that vary by region, reflecting local regulations around student competitions.

Projects must be built using Swift Playgrounds version 4.6 or later, or Xcode 26 or later. Apple recently expanded its developer toolset with Xcode 26.3, adding AI-assisted coding features intended to support code completion and debugging, though the company has positioned these tools as optional aids rather than core requirements. All submissions must run fully offline, as network access is disabled during the review process, and the final ZIP file must not exceed 25 MB, reinforcing a focus on efficiency and intentional design choices.

In a launch video accompanying the opening of submissions, Apple representatives emphasized design fundamentals. They encouraged participants to rely on standard system components and the Liquid Glass design language introduced across Apple platforms last year, rather than custom visual effects that may distract from usability. Students were advised to define a clear problem or narrative early in the process, with the suggestion that smaller, focused ideas tend to translate better within the challenge’s tight time and size constraints.

Apple also highlighted past participants to illustrate the range of possible projects. Previous winners Adrit Rao and Marina Lee shared their experiences, noting that the challenge played a role in shaping their academic and professional paths. Rao’s submission explored simulations of eye conditions to improve accessibility awareness, while Lee developed a tool aimed at helping users prepare for wildfire evacuations. Both emphasized that extensive prior experience with Swift is not required, framing the challenge as a learning opportunity as much as a competition.

For 2026, Apple plans to select 350 winners, including 50 Distinguished Winners whose projects stand out for execution and originality. Students may receive the award up to three times during their academic careers, although the Distinguished Winner designation is limited to a single occurrence, underscoring its role as a one-time recognition of exceptional work.
