Android to potentially introduce “Rich Ongoing Notifications” in Android 16

Evidence suggests Google is developing a new feature for Android that closely resembles Apple’s Live Activities. Referred to as “Rich Ongoing Notifications,” this functionality could allow apps to display real-time information in a persistent status bar, similar to how Live Activities appear in the Dynamic Island on iPhones.

Discovered within the Android 15 QPR1 Beta 3 release, this new API could enable apps to present concise, glanceable updates without interrupting the user’s workflow. Imagine tracking your Uber’s ETA or receiving live transit updates, all while continuing to use other apps seamlessly.

The API reportedly allows developers to create unique “chips” with custom text and background colors, residing in the status bar. This offers a discreet yet informative way to keep users updated on essential information.

While the feature is still under development, it is speculated to launch with Android 16. This addition could significantly enhance the Android user experience, providing a more dynamic and informative way to interact with apps.

As Android continues to evolve, it’s clear that Google is exploring innovative ways to improve its mobile operating system. The potential introduction of Rich Ongoing Notifications highlights a commitment to providing users with more efficient and engaging ways to stay informed.
