Google has begun rolling out the latest version of its mobile operating system, Android 15, to eligible Pixel devices. This update brings a host of new features and improvements, with a particular emphasis on security and enhancements for large-screen devices like foldables and tablets.
Android 15 introduces several security features designed to protect users’ personal information and deter theft. One standout feature is Theft Detection Lock, which utilizes AI to determine if your phone has been stolen. If the phone senses it is being carried away, whether by someone running, driving, or even cycling, it will automatically lock itself. This proactive measure adds an extra layer of protection against device theft.
In addition to Theft Detection Lock, Android 15 offers Remote Lock, allowing users to secure their device from another device using their phone number and a security check. The update also includes measures to combat SIM swapping, a tactic used by criminals to gain access to personal data and financial accounts. If multiple failed attempts are made to access an app or the Settings app (potentially to remove the SIM card and disable Find My Device), the device will immediately lock. These robust security features aim to make stolen devices less appealing to thieves and provide users with greater peace of mind.
Android 15 introduces Private Space, a feature that allows users to hide sensitive apps from view. Hidden apps will not appear in the app list, recent apps view, notifications, or settings. Users can even conceal the existence of Private Space itself, providing an additional layer of privacy.
For users of foldable phones and tablets, Android 15 offers several improvements. The update allows users to pin and unpin the taskbar, providing quick access to favorite apps and greater customization of the device layout. App pairingsimplifies multitasking by combining two frequently used apps into a single tappable icon.
Android 15 also includes enhancements to low-light camera performance, expanded in-app camera controls for third-party apps, and support for satellite connectivity in carrier messaging apps. Furthermore, apps using Passkeys for authentication will allow for one-tap login.
The update is currently available for a range of Pixel devices, including the Pixel 6 series, Pixel 7 series, Pixel 8 series, Pixel Fold, Pixel 9 series (including the Pro and Pro XL models), Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and the Pixel Tablet. Pixel users can navigate to Settings > System > Software updates to install Android 15 and experience the latest features and improvements.
