This Tecno concept could kill smartphone bezels for good

Tecno has spent the past few years using major technology shows as a testing ground for smartphone ideas that may never reach store shelves. At IFA 2026, its latest experiment tackles one of the industry’s longest-running design obsessions: eliminating the bezel altogether.

The company’s Next-Gen Bezelless Concept Phone features what Tecno describes as a 0mm bezel, effectively pushing the display all the way to the surrounding frame. It is still a prototype rather than an announced commercial product, so there is no price, release date or indication that consumers will eventually be able to buy one.

That distinction matters. Smartphone manufacturers have steadily reduced display borders for years, particularly on premium devices, but getting to a genuinely bezel-free design is more complicated than simply making the screen larger. The edges of a phone still need to accommodate structural components while surviving the drops, pressure and everyday abuse expected of a mass-market device.

Tecno says it achieved the concept’s borderless appearance through changes to internal component stacking, the phone’s structure and the way the display itself is packaged. From the front, that creates an unusually uninterrupted screen that makes even today’s thin-bezel flagships look comparatively conventional.

Whether the engineering can survive the transition from show-floor prototype to production hardware remains the bigger question. Extremely narrow borders can introduce practical concerns around durability, accidental touch input, repair costs and manufacturing yields. None of those issues are addressed by demonstrating a working concept, and Tecno has not provided detailed specifications or production plans.

Still, the device is interesting precisely because smartphone design has become increasingly difficult to differentiate. Modern slab phones have converged around similar shapes, camera arrangements and display proportions, leaving manufacturers searching for increasingly subtle ways to make hardware feel new. A genuinely bezel-free screen would at least deliver an immediately visible change rather than another fractional reduction in border thickness.

Tecno has also given the rear of the concept some attention. The back panel uses a three-dimensional visual effect intended to create a sense of depth rather than relying on a conventional flat finish. That continues the manufacturer’s experiments with unusual smartphone materials and surfaces. At MWC 2025, Tecno demonstrated concepts involving photochromic materials, Display Electronic Slurry technology and combinations of optical fibres and LEDs.

The company has increasingly treated concept devices as a way to explore hardware ideas outside the constraints of its commercial lineup. It also demonstrated a modular smartphone concept at MWC 2026, another approach that prioritised experimentation over an immediate retail product.

A zero-bezel phone arguably has a clearer path toward mainstream adoption than some of those experiments because the industry has already been moving in that direction for years. Tecno has shown that the visual effect can work on a prototype. The harder—and considerably more important—challenge is proving it can be manufactured reliably, protected from everyday damage and sold at a sensible price.
