Apple’s iPad mini has spent years as the small, quiet member of the lineup, getting modest updates while the bigger iPads took the spotlight. This one is different. The new iPad mini gets an OLED screen, a 2-nanometer chip, waterproofing and a thinner body.
The screen is the biggest change. Apple has replaced the LCD with an 8.5-inch OLED panel, up from 8.3 inches, and fit it into the same footprint by trimming the bezels by what it says is 24 percent. OLED means true blacks, sharper contrast and HDR content that should look far better than before. Apple quotes peak brightness of 1,200 nits, more than double the previous model, and a minimum of 1 nit for reading in the dark. For the first time, the mini also offers a nano-texture matte finish, previously available only on iPad Pro.

The new model is just 5.4 mm thin and carries an IP67 rating, so it can survive rain, spills and the occasional drop into a pool. No iPad has had an official water resistance rating before, which makes the mini an unusually durable option for travel, fieldwork or reading outdoors.
The A20 Pro chip brings a large jump in power. Apple claims up to 4.5x faster AI performance, 2.7x faster graphics and 60 percent faster multitasking than the last generation. It also adds hardware ray tracing and mesh shading, which turns the mini into a serious handheld gaming device. The fine print matters, though: the most powerful dual 16-core Neural Engine is only in the 512GB model, so anyone planning to run local AI models will want the top tier.

Several smaller changes fix long-standing complaints. The front camera has moved to the landscape edge, so video calls look natural. The speakers have been redesigned for punchier bass. Apple’s own N1 chip adds Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, and cellular models get the faster C2 modem. With iPadOS 27.2, the mini can also extend its display to an external monitor.

The tablet comes in midnight and starlight with up to 512GB of storage. Pre-orders open October 28 and deliveries begin November 6, with UAE pricing starting at AED 2,849. Apple hasn’t yet shared weight or battery life figures, and those will show whether the slimmer design involves any compromises.
For years, choosing the iPad mini meant choosing portability over features. That trade-off now looks much smaller, and the mini looks like one of the most interesting devices Apple has released this year.
