Report: Apple boosts iPhone Duo production to 14 million

The iPhone Duo goes on sale today, and if supply chain reports are accurate, Apple is already trying to build far more of them than it first planned. Foxconn and Apple’s component suppliers have reportedly been told to increase iPhone Duo production for the phone’s first 12 months from 9.7 million units to 14 million. That’s an increase of about 44%, and it follows a pre-order period that went badly for anyone who didn’t order immediately, with delivery estimates moving into January within hours.

The figure is notable because it doesn’t fit what was known before. In July, Nikkei Asia reported that Apple had asked suppliers for roughly 10 million foldable iPhones in 2026. By September, analyst Jeff Pu had cut his own estimate to about 6 million units this year, pointing to limited hinge production. A 14 million target suggests either that Apple believes those bottlenecks are easing or that demand has persuaded it to push suppliers harder regardless.

A higher order doesn’t guarantee more phones, though. Earlier reports described manufacturing problems affecting final assembly, the folding display and the hinge, which is the 3D-printed titanium part central to Apple’s durability claims. Fabrication of that kind doesn’t scale overnight. Many early buyers have seen their delivery dates move forward, which suggests output is improving, but the real test is whether that continues once the first wave of orders is filled.

Apple appears to be managing expectations for launch day itself. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the US, there’s a limit of two per customer, and Apple has warned that stock for walk-in buyers will be limited. Those are the usual signs of a launch where supply is tight, whether by necessity or partly by design.

The bigger picture concerns the foldable market as a whole. The same report forecasts global foldable shipments growing 25.7% in 2026 and 59.1% in 2027, after only 7.4% growth in 2025, with Apple’s arrival a large part of that. Samsung, Google, Huawei and others spent years trying to make foldables a mass-market product without getting there. Apple’s entry may be what finally changes that, or at least what gets many more people to try one.

A $1,999 phone that sold out within hours shows that early adopters were waiting for Apple. Whether 14 million people will pay that much once the initial excitement fades is the question that will decide if the foldable iPhone becomes a regular product line or remains a niche luxury.
