Grok Bot can now control your lights, calendar and messages

Grok Bot is no longer limited to answering questions. xAI has started rolling out an update on iOS and Android that lets its assistant connect to core apps on your phone, so it can act on your schedule, your contacts and even your home instead of just talking about them.

The integration covers six apps and services. Grok Bot can now read your calendar to summarise your day and add new events, and it can create and check reminders. It can look up existing contacts and add new ones, and it can read and send messages. With location access, it can suggest nearby places. Through the Home app, it can control connected smart home devices, so a request like switching off the lights or locking the front door no longer means opening a separate app.

Access is opt-in for each app. Every integration has its own Allow toggle, so you could let Grok Bot handle reminders while keeping it away from your messages, for example. That granular control matters here, because an assistant that can read your conversations and unlock your door is asking for a lot of trust. xAI hasn’t yet explained in detail how data from these connected apps is processed or stored, and anyone weighing the trade-off will want that answer before granting full access.

The update caps an active few weeks for the app. On iPhone, Grok Bot recently gained the option to start a voice conversation from the Action Button, and it also arrived on Apple CarPlay, joining assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity on the dashboard. Each step has moved it further from a chatbot you visit and closer to something that runs in the background of your day.

That direction matches where the rest of the industry is heading. Google keeps linking Gemini to its own services, including Gmail, Photos and Maps, while Apple has spent years promising a more capable, context-aware Siri. The difference is that Google and Apple own the platforms their assistants run on. Grok Bot is a third-party app working within whatever permissions iOS and Android allow, which may limit how smoothly some actions work, particularly on iPhone.

What’s still unclear is how reliable these actions are in daily use. Adding a calendar entry is easy to show in an announcement, but an assistant only earns a permanent place on your phone if it gets the details right every time. Booking a meeting in the wrong time zone or sending a message to the wrong contact is the kind of mistake that makes people go back to doing it themselves.
