Naruto’s Baryon Mode makes him Konoha’s strongest ninja ever

After nearly three decades of escalating power levels, Naruto Uzumaki has a strong claim to one title that once seemed almost impossible to settle: the most powerful ninja Konoha has ever produced.

The reason comes down to Baryon Mode, the short-lived transformation Naruto used against Isshiki Otsutsuki in Boruto. It pushed Naruto beyond the limits established during the original series and, at least at its peak, beyond other legendary shinobi including Hashirama Senju, Madara Uchiha and Sasuke Uchiha.

That represents quite a shift from Naruto’s early years. The Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, was once presented as one of the greatest shinobi of his generation, while Hashirama later became the benchmark against which extraordinary ninja were measured. The Fourth Great Ninja War pushed that ceiling considerably higher, particularly after Madara and Obito gained Ten-Tails powers.

By the end of Naruto, however, Naruto and Sasuke had effectively moved beyond that older generation. Six Paths abilities transformed both characters into fighters capable of confronting threats that conventional shinobi could barely approach.

Baryon Mode moved the ceiling again.

Unlike Naruto’s previous transformations, the form doesn’t simply give him access to another reserve of chakra. Kurama explains that Naruto and Kurama’s chakra effectively serves as material for producing a new form of energy. The process is compared to nuclear fusion, which also explains why Baryon Mode comes with such an extreme cost.

Against Isshiki, the difference was immediately apparent. Naruto could temporarily fight an opponent who had previously overwhelmed Naruto and Sasuke together. Baryon Mode also had another crucial property: physical contact could reduce Isshiki’s remaining lifespan, turning Naruto’s attacks into something more dangerous than straightforward punches and kicks.

There was, however, a catch big enough to prevent Baryon Mode from becoming Naruto’s permanent upgrade.

The transformation was temporary, and its use ultimately resulted in the loss of Kurama. That means describing Naruto as Konoha’s strongest ninja requires an important qualification: this refers to Naruto at his Baryon Mode peak, rather than his current post-Kurama strength.

Boruto Uzumaki is already complicating that ranking.

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex has substantially increased Boruto’s abilities following his training under Sasuke and Kashin Koji, while his connection to Momoshiki Otsutsuki gives him access to powers that traditional shinobi simply never possessed. The source material also points toward Boruto continuing to develop those abilities rather than having reached his limit.

That makes Naruto’s position less permanent than it sounds. Boruto, Kawaki, Sarada and Himawari are all part of a generation operating within a very different power system from the one that defined early Naruto.

For now, though, Baryon Mode remains Naruto’s defining argument. Hashirama was once Konoha’s seemingly unreachable standard, and Naruto spent much of his story trying to surpass the Hokage who came before him. By the time Baryon Mode appeared, the question was no longer whether Naruto had surpassed them, but whether the next generation could eventually surpass him.
