John Ternus has officially taken control of Apple, beginning a new chapter for the company after Tim Cook’s 15-year run as chief executive.
The leadership change took effect on September 1, following Apple’s announcement in April that Ternus would succeed Cook. Ternus, an engineer who joined Apple in 2001 and most recently served as senior vice president of hardware engineering, now steps into one of the most closely watched jobs in the technology industry.
The appointment represents a significant shift, even if Apple has deliberately made the transition look uneventful. Cook took over from Steve Jobs in 2011, inheriting a company already transformed by the iPhone but facing enormous questions about whether its momentum could survive without its co-founder.
Under Cook, Apple expanded into a multi-trillion-dollar company while pushing deeper into services, wearables and custom silicon. His tenure was defined less by launching entirely new computing categories and more by turning Apple’s existing ecosystem into an exceptionally large and tightly integrated business.
Cook is not disappearing from Apple either. He remains on the company’s board as executive chair, giving Ternus access to his predecessor while creating some interesting questions about how much independence the new CEO will have during the early stages of the transition.
Ternus arrives with a very different background. His career at Apple has been closely connected to hardware engineering, and he has become an increasingly visible presence during the company’s product presentations. That engineering experience makes his appointment particularly notable at a moment when Apple is juggling several major hardware and platform challenges.
The company must keep the iPhone relevant in an increasingly mature smartphone market while developing its artificial intelligence strategy, expanding Apple silicon and deciding how aggressively to pursue newer product categories. Apple’s ambitions around spatial computing also remain under scrutiny, particularly as Vision Pro attempts to establish a meaningful role beyond its expensive first-generation hardware.
Ternus will not have much time for a ceremonial introduction. His first major product event as Apple CEO is scheduled for September 9, when the company is expected to introduce its next generation of iPhones alongside new Apple Watch hardware and other products.
That event will inevitably be treated as an early test of the Ternus era, although Apple products appearing this month will have been developed long before he became CEO. The more meaningful evidence will come later, as decisions made under his leadership begin reaching consumers.
Cook’s greatest achievement may have been proving that Apple could thrive after Steve Jobs. Ternus inherits a different problem: proving that a company operating at Apple’s enormous scale can still find its next genuinely important technology platform.
