Eight Sleep’s menopause mode wants to stop hot flashes before they start

Eight Sleep is pointing its temperature-controlled Pod at one of the most common and least discussed sleep problems: menopause. The company has added a new Menopause Mode to its smart sleep system, built for women going through perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause, and it targets night-time overheating with a pre-emptive approach.

This isn’t Eight Sleep’s first attempt at the problem. The Pod already had a Hot Flash mode, which responded to overheating as it happened. Menopause Mode tries to get ahead of it. It cools the user’s side of the bed before the hours when hot flashes are most likely to strike, rather than waiting for one to wake them. Over time, the system adjusts that timing based on the sleeper’s habits, personal temperature preferences, bedroom conditions and seasonal shifts. Eight Sleep says the goal is to keep the bed at a steady, comfortable temperature through the night.

Prediction will never be perfect, so there’s also a manual fallback. A button on the side of the Pod starts cooling straight away when a hot flash arrives unexpectedly. Users can set how long the cooling runs, which matters at 3am when nobody wants to unlock a phone and open an app. Because the Pod controls each side of the bed separately, a partner who runs cold shouldn’t end up shivering.

The data side may prove just as interesting as the cooling. Menopause Mode adds sleep insights that show how peri and postmenopausal symptoms are affecting a user’s rest, and how those patterns compare with other women at the same stage. That kind of benchmarking is rare in consumer sleep tech, which has historically treated women’s health as an afterthought.

Eight Sleep says the feature was tested with women experiencing menopause. Participants reported 56% fewer night-time hot flashes on average, and the company also cites an 85% total reduction. It hasn’t been made clear how those two figures relate, how large the study was, or whether it was independently reviewed. Those details matter before the numbers are treated as anything more than company claims.

The update arrives a few months after the launch of the Pod 6, the sixth generation of the hardware. However, Menopause Mode works on any Pod through the iOS and Android app. The catch is familiar to Eight Sleep owners: it requires an active Autopilot membership, so the feature sits behind a subscription on top of an already premium purchase.

That trade-off is the real test. Menopause is a long-term reality for millions of women, and a smart bed that eases it could be valuable. Whether people will keep paying every month to access it is a separate question.
