ChatGPT can now edit Google Drive files directly from chat

OpenAI is turning ChatGPT’s Google Drive integration into something considerably more useful than a file browser. A new update allows users to open, edit and save supported Drive files directly through ChatGPT, reducing the need to jump between the chatbot and Google’s own productivity apps.

The expanded Google Drive plugin began rolling out on August 13 to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare subscribers using the web version of ChatGPT. Mobile support is planned, although OpenAI has not provided a release date.

Previously, connecting cloud storage to an AI assistant was largely about giving the model access to information. This update pushes ChatGPT further into the productivity layer itself. Users can browse supported files through ChatGPT’s Library, attach them to conversations and ask the AI to work with their contents. That can include summarising documents, comparing information across files, analysing material or creating new content based on existing documents.

More importantly, users who grant the necessary permissions can have changes written back to the original Google Drive file. That makes the integration less of a one-way import mechanism and more of an editing workflow. ChatGPT can also work with folders, allowing users to request changes across multiple files rather than handling each document separately.

The feature currently works with files stored in My Drive and items that have been shared directly with the user. Access is handled through the Google Drive plugin, which needs to be installed and connected before Drive content appears inside ChatGPT. Files can then be brought into a conversation through mentions or ChatGPT’s file and Library controls.

The broader significance is the continuing shift from AI chatbots that simply answer questions toward assistants capable of acting on a user’s existing work. Cloud storage is particularly important in that transition because documents, spreadsheets and other files often contain the context an AI system needs to perform useful workplace tasks.

There is also an obvious competitive angle. Google has been steadily integrating Gemini into Drive and its Workspace applications, giving users AI tools within the ecosystem where their documents already live. OpenAI’s deeper Google Drive integration offers another route for people who keep their files on Google’s platform but prefer ChatGPT as their AI assistant.

That convenience also makes permissions worth watching. Allowing an AI service to access files is one thing; allowing it to modify and automatically save changes introduces a higher level of trust. Users working with important documents will need to pay attention to what files ChatGPT can access and review AI-generated edits where accuracy matters.

OpenAI has been steadily broadening ChatGPT beyond its original conversational interface, and direct Google Drive editing is another step in that direction. The more interesting competition may no longer be about which chatbot gives the best answer, but which assistant can fit most naturally into the software people already use to get work done.
