Apple’s touchscreen MacBook Pro could land in stores on 6 November

Apple’s long-rumoured touchscreen MacBook Pro may be in stores sooner than expected. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple has scheduled a retail “reset” from the evening of Thursday, 5 November into Friday, 6 November. A reset usually means new signage, new display tables and new products. Earlier reports pointed to an announcement as early as 27 October, so 6 November would fit Apple’s usual pattern of announcing a product and putting it on sale about a week or so later.

A store refresh is not proof of a launch, though. It shows when Apple plans to change its displays, not exactly what will be on them. Apple has not confirmed any date. Still, the timing fits a busy season that has already included the iPhone Duo and HomePod mini 2, and no other Apple release appears to be scheduled for that Friday.

What makes this machine notable is the history behind it. For more than a decade, Apple argued that touchscreens belonged on iPads, not Macs. Steve Jobs said touching a vertical laptop screen was tiring for the arm, and Apple’s closest attempt was the Touch Bar, a narrow strip above the keyboard that never caught on and was dropped in 2023. Windows laptop makers, meanwhile, have sold touchscreen models for years. If the reports are accurate, Apple is not just adding touch support but also changing its long-held view of how a Mac should work.

The reported hardware supports that. The display is said to be a Tandem OLED panel, the stacked-layer technology Apple introduced on the iPad Pro, with a Dynamic Island slightly smaller than the iPhone’s. Face ID is reportedly not included. The software appears to be changing as well. Recent macOS 27 betas include touch-related changes such as pull-to-refresh, Sidecar touch input and slightly larger menu bar items. Gurman has also described menus that open around a fingertip and controls that adapt to how the user works.

The chips are where buyers may hesitate. Rather than debut Apple’s first 2nm M6 Pro and M6 Max, the redesign is expected to use the M5 Pro and M5 Max already sold in the current MacBook Pro. The chassis is reportedly thinner and noticeably lighter, but anyone buying mainly for performance may get the same chips they could buy today, just in a new design.

For buyers in the UAE, there is still no regional pricing or availability for any OLED model, and the current M5 Pro MacBook Pro remains Apple’s local option. The bigger unknown is cost. OLED panels and a full redesign rarely come cheap, and Apple will need to convince MacBook Pro buyers that touch is worth paying more for after years of telling them they didn’t need it.
