The 2026 Emmy Awards may have arrived with The Pitt and Hacks carrying the largest nomination totals, but Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay ended the night as the show everyone else had to chase. The comedy-horror series converted its momentum into victories across every major category in which it competed, including Outstanding Comedy Series.
Widow’s Bay also produced one of the ceremony’s biggest individual achievements. Matthew Rhys won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for the show while also taking the limited or anthology lead actor prize for The Beast in Me. Combined with his earlier drama win for The Americans, Rhys became the first performer to win lead actor Emmys across drama, comedy and limited or anthology categories.
The show’s strength extended well beyond Rhys. Kate O’Flynn earned her first Emmy for supporting comedy performance, beating a field that included Hacks star Hannah Einbinder and fellow Widow’s Bay nominee Dale Dickey. Stephen Root also collected his first Emmy, defeating Shrinking’s Harrison Ford in supporting comedy. Betty Gilpin had already added a guest acting victory to the series’ haul.
Apple TV had another important result with Pluribus. Rhea Seehorn won her first Emmy for lead actress in a drama, overcoming Keri Russell and two-time Euphoria winner Zendaya. The victory carries extra weight after Seehorn’s acclaimed run as Kim Wexler on Better Call Saul never produced an Emmy win. Pluribus creator Vince Gilligan also won for writing, although he missed out on drama directing to Slow Horses director Saul Metzstein.
HBO Max’s The Pitt hardly went home empty-handed. It repeated its victories for Outstanding Drama Series and lead actor Noah Wyle, but several anticipated supporting wins failed to materialise. Allison Janney took supporting drama actress for The Diplomat instead of defending winner Katherine LaNasa, while Task’s Tom Pelphrey beat The Pitt’s Patrick Ball for supporting actor.
There was more history for Jean Smart. Her lead comedy actress victory for the final season of Hacks meant she won the category for every season of the series. It also gave Smart eight Primetime Emmy acting victories, tying Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
The limited-series field produced another notable upset as DTF St. Louis defeated Beef for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, following earlier Creative Arts Emmy victories for performers Linda Cardellini and David Harbour and writer-director Steven Conrad. Sally Field, meanwhile, won lead actress in the category for Remarkably Bright Creatures over Carey Mulligan.
The broader message from the 2026 Emmys is less about a single upset than the continuing fragmentation of prestige television. Established favourites such as The Pitt and Hacks remained formidable, but new shows were able to break through immediately. Widow’s Bay winning comedy in its first season, one year after The Studio achieved the same feat, also leaves Apple TV with an increasingly conspicuous grip on the category — and potentially an awkward in-house battle if both series meet at a future Emmys.
