WhatsApp Group Status is here, and your family chat will never recover

WhatsApp is putting groups at the centre of its latest update, with a set of features designed to make busy group chats easier to manage and a little more personal. The headline addition is Group Status, which takes the familiar disappearing Status format and limits it to members of a specific group.

Until now, Status has worked much like Stories on Instagram, with updates shared with your contact list rather than a defined circle. Group Status changes that by letting you post updates only the members of a group can see. Those members can view, react to and like the posts, and contribute their own, effectively creating a shared, temporary space alongside the main conversation. As with regular Status, everything vanishes after 24 hours.

It’s a sensible move. For many people, the most meaningful activity on WhatsApp happens in family groups, friend circles and community chats rather than one-to-one messages. Giving those groups their own ephemeral layer feels like a natural fit, and it could make Status, still underused by many compared with chats, more relevant.

The other changes are practical fixes for long-standing annoyances. Group admins could already share previous messages with new members while adding them, but that option is now available after someone has joined as well, simply by tapping their name in the chat. That removes the awkward moment of a newcomer arriving mid-conversation with no idea what’s going on.

Pinned messages also lose their expiry date. WhatsApp previously limited pins to set durations, which made them less useful for information that groups need to keep visible, such as event details, rules or shared links. Permanent pins should make larger groups noticeably easier to run.

Finally, a new chat filter surfaces every unread group conversation where you were mentioned or received a direct reply, including messages sent using the @all tag. For anyone in dozens of noisy groups, that could be the most useful feature of the lot, cutting through the volume to show where your attention is actually needed.

WhatsApp hasn’t specified exactly how quickly the features will reach all users across Android and iOS, and staged rollouts are common for the app, so availability may vary for a while.

Taken together, the update reflects a clear trend: WhatsApp increasingly wants to be a home for communities, not just private messaging. The real test is whether Group Status catches on, or simply becomes one more feature buried behind already crowded group chats.
