The eclipse will cross Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain, making it a particularly notable astronomical event for European observers. It is the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe since 1999, putting parts of the continent back in the path of totality after more than a quarter of a century.
For viewers in the UAE, NASA’s livestream is scheduled to begin at 9:15pm local time. The broadcast will feature telescope feeds from several locations along the eclipse path, accompanied by commentary from solar physicists. Totality is expected to reach Iceland at around 9:45pm UAE time before reaching Spain at approximately 10:28pm.
A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking the Sun’s visible surface for observers positioned within a relatively narrow path. Those inside that path can experience a brief period of darkness during the day, while areas farther away may see a partial eclipse.
The UAE will not see either phase of this particular event, making livestreaming the most practical option for anyone in the country wanting to follow it as it happens.
NASA’s presence on Twitch also reflects how coverage of major scientific events has expanded beyond conventional television broadcasts and dedicated science websites. Twitch says that interest in science-related content on its platform has been increasing. According to figures provided by the company, its Science & Technology category grew 24% globally over the past 12 months, while viewing hours for streams carrying the “Astronomy” tag increased by 25%.
The platform also says 20% of STEM-focused livestreams with more than 10 hours of broadcast time now originate from channels created within the past year. Those numbers come from Twitch itself, but they point to a broader trend in science communication, where researchers, educators and enthusiasts increasingly use platforms originally associated with gaming and entertainment to reach audiences directly.
For UAE astronomy fans, tonight’s eclipse won’t require eclipse glasses or a journey into the path of totality. NASA’s Twitch broadcast provides a front-row digital alternative, with the added advantage of telescope views from locations where the Moon will completely cover the Sun.
