Commodore 77 revives 1980s computing with a Cyberpunk twist

Commodore is leaning deeper into its retro revival with the Commodore 77, a Cyberpunk 2077-themed version of its modern Commodore 64-inspired machine that was unveiled during Gamescom 2026.

Developed in collaboration with CD Projekt Red, the Commodore 77 is more than a cosmetic reskin. It keeps the deliberately old-school form factor associated with the classic C64, but adds hardware upgrades, themed software and a distinctly Night City-inspired design aimed squarely at collectors and retro computing fans.

The exterior swaps the familiar Commodore 64 identity for Commodore 77 branding and introduces a weathered Cyberpunk-style finish. A brushed-metal section sits above the function keys, while the rest of the chassis adopts colours and detailing designed to match the visual language of Cyberpunk 2077.

The bigger changes are underneath. Commodore says the C77 can operate at up to 77MHz, a dramatic increase from the roughly 1MHz clock speed of the original Commodore 64. It also includes 77MB of system memory, compared with 16MB in the Commodore 64 Ultimate.

That extra performance sounds almost comically modest next to a modern laptop or gaming PC, but this is hardware built around a very different goal. The attraction is running and creating software within the constraints of classic computing, while adding enough headroom for more ambitious demonstrations and projects.

There is one obvious downside: software written with the original machine’s timing assumptions in mind can run far too quickly. Commodore has accounted for that by allowing users to disable the faster operating mode through the system menus.

The Cyberpunk partnership extends into the software experience as well. The machine includes a customised Commodore 77 BASIC 2.0 boot screen, while its physical manual has been redesigned around Cyberpunk 2077 and includes themed BASIC programs users can type in themselves — a suitably nostalgic throwback to how many people learned programming in the 1980s.

Each system also ships with an Arasaka-inspired cartridge containing a demo produced by Polish demoscene group Arise. Chiptune musician LukHash created the soundtrack, which takes advantage of the machine’s 24-track stereo SID audio capabilities. The hardware also includes LEDs that can react to music during the demonstration.

Commodore is clearly positioning the C77 as a collectible as much as a usable computer. The package includes themed packaging, stickers and pins alongside the machine itself, reinforcing that this is aimed at enthusiasts rather than anyone looking for practical everyday computing.

Preorders are open at $377, with Commodore targeting a release sometime in 2027.

The more interesting question is whether machines like the Commodore 77 can turn the current appetite for retro hardware into something sustainable. Nostalgia gets people through the door, but the inclusion of programmable software, demoscene content and usable hardware suggests Commodore wants this revival to be more than another shelf-bound collector’s item.
