Alien: Romulus: what we know so far about the new breed of terror

The chilling tagline, “In space, no one can hear you scream,” from the iconic Alien franchise holds a hidden truth – only true in the vacuum. Within the confines of a spaceship, screams become horrifyingly audible. And scream they will in the upcoming Alien: Romulus, the latest installment set to terrify audiences on the big screen.

Originally planned for a direct-to-streaming release, Alien: Romulus received a well-deserved upgrade to a theatrical release. This marks the franchise’s triumphant return to the big screen after a seven-year hiatus. To gear you up for this highly anticipated Xenomorph encounter, here’s a deep dive into everything Alien: Romulus has to offer.

A New Generation Faces the Horror

Plot details surrounding Romulus are shrouded in secrecy, but one thing is clear: a fresh-faced cast takes center stage. We meet a group of young colonists tasked with scavenging a derelict space station for valuable resources. Unfortunately, their search unearths a horrifying truth – a nest of Xenomorphs teeming within the station’s metallic walls. Their mission for survival takes a drastic turn as they fight for their lives against the deadly creatures.

A Gap in the Alien Timeline

Director Fede Álvarez has confirmed that Romulus takes place within the decades following the events of Alien and preceding Aliens. This timeline placement effectively eliminates the possibility of a Sigourney Weaver cameo as Ellen Ripley, as she remained in cryosleep during that period. The film raises intriguing questions: how did the Xenomorphs infest the space station, and how much does Earth truly understand the ongoing threat they pose?

A Fresh Cast Steps Up

Cailee Spaeny leads the young cast as Rain Carradine, accompanied by David Jonsson as Andy, Isabela Merced as Kay,and Archie Renaux as Tyler. Additional cast members include Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu, though their character details remain under wraps. Considering the franchise’s notorious body count, expect most, if not all, of these characters to face a perilous fate.

Facehuggers Take Center Stage

The first teaser trailer for Alien: Romulus masterfully elevates the terror associated with Facehuggers. Unlike previous portrayals, these parasitic creatures exhibit a terrifying level of speed and ferocity, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats. The trailer masterfully builds suspense, withholding a full-grown Xenomorph reveal until the very end. This strategic approach underscores the effectiveness of fear of the unknown, making the Xenomorphs all the more terrifying when they finally take center stage.

On June 4th, 20th Century Studios unveiled the official Alien: Romulus trailer, showcasing the Facehugger and Chestburster wreaking havoc on the unsuspecting colonists. The trailer culminates in a heart-stopping moment where a Xenomorph emerges, its grotesque form a horrifying sight for the remaining human crew.

Mark Your Calendars for Terror

Alien: Romulus is poised to terrify audiences when it hits theaters on August 16th. While traditionally a slow month during the summer blockbuster season, films like Guardians of the Galaxy have proven that a mid-August release slot can be highly successful. Alien: Romulus seems poised to follow suit, offering a thrilling return to the franchise’s roots and a terrifying new chapter in the Xenomorph saga.
