Disney+ quietly drops The Bear prequel episode Gary in the UAE

Hulu has quietly released a new one-off episode from the world of The Bear, titled Gary, which is now available to stream. The 59-minute special focuses on two key supporting characters from the series, offering a prequel story set several years before the events of the main show.

Jon Bernthal reprises his role as Michael “Mikey” Berzatto, the late brother whose legacy continues to shape the Berzatto family restaurant, while Ebon Moss-Bachrach returns as Richard “Richie” Jerimovich. The pair, who previously worked together on The Punisher, co-wrote the episode, which follows Richie and Mikey on a work trip to Gary, Indiana. This modest detour into the characters’ past arrives as fans await the next full season of the acclaimed Hulu drama, providing a bridge that fills in some emotional and narrative gaps without requiring major new production.

Bernthal’s performance as Mikey has been one of the quieter highlights of The Bear. Limited largely to flashbacks, his portrayal earned three Emmy nominations for guest acting and a win in 2024. The character’s presence lingers over the series even in absence, representing both the weight of family trauma and the complicated pull of the restaurant business. Moss-Bachrach’s Richie, meanwhile, has evolved from hot-headed comic relief into one of the show’s most layered figures. Giving these actors room to collaborate on material feels like a natural extension of the show’s ensemble-driven approach, though it also highlights how The Bear often relies on its supporting cast to carry significant emotional freight.

The timing of this drop is notable. Bernthal is having a particularly busy 2026, with upcoming appearances as the Punisher in an MCU special presentation on Disney+ in May, a role opposite Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and a part as Menelaus in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey arriving in July. Slotting in this Bear project amid that slate suggests the special was produced efficiently, perhaps as a cost-effective way to maintain momentum for the series between seasons.

The Bear itself has become one of Hulu’s flagship titles since its 2022 debut, blending sharp writing, intense kitchen realism, and moments of unexpected tenderness. Its success helped popularize a more grounded, character-focused style of prestige television centered on blue-collar work and family dysfunction. Yet the show has also faced quiet questions about sustainability: the breakneck pacing of its early seasons, the toll of its production intensity, and whether expanding the universe through specials risks diluting the main narrative’s focus. Gary feels relatively low-risk in that regard, functioning more as a character study than a franchise extender.

Viewers can watch Gary now alongside the first four seasons on Hulu. It remains to be seen whether this prequel will spark broader interest in additional side stories or simply serve as a thoughtful pause before the main series returns. In an era of relentless franchise content, a single contained episode co-written by its leads stands out as a restrained and actor-driven choice.
