The Essential Phone is the Latest Modular Smartphone on the Market

Essential Phone #3

Andy Rubin is a man whose name turns heads and opens doors and that’s because he’s the co-founder of Android. As a result, when Rubin started teasing a smartphone months ago, interest was peaked. Rubin has finally unveiled the modular Essential Phone.

The gorgeous looking smartphone comes with a stunning 5.7-inch QHD edge-to-edge display (2560 x 1312 pixels & a 19:10 aspect ratio) that takes up the entire front of the device, going as far as to encircle the front-facing camera. A sheet of Corning Glass 5 cover glass wraps around the display to protect it, whilst the rest smartphone is made from smooth titanium, except for the back which is made of ceramic to make it more sturdy.

When it comes to specifications, Rubin’s new smartphone does not disappoint. The Essential Phone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 and offers 4GB of RAM along with 128GB storage. A 3040 mAh battery powers the device and is complemented by fast-charging via USB. The total dimensions of the Essential Phone are 141.5 x 71.1 x 7.8 mm and it comes in on the weighing scale at just under 185 grammes.

Essential Phone #2

Meanwhile, when it comes to photography, the Essential Phone has two 13MP cameras on the rear which, according to Essential, is the world’s thinnest dual camera system built for a phone. Meanwhile, the front-facing camera is capable of producing 8MP still photos and 4K video.

But far more interesting is the fact that the back also sports a magnetic connector at the top that allows you to connect accessories. So far Essential has unveiled an attachable 360-degree camera and a wireless charging dock as initial modular devices.

Essential Phone #3

The Essential Phone runs Android, though it is uncertain which exact version (we would assume that, since the creator is also the co-founder of Android, it would be Nougat). Furthermore, Essential is also creating its own operating system Ambien OS to operate a smart speaker, the Essential Home, that it is also developing. The phone is currently available for pre-order in the US at the price of $699. It will come in four different colours: Black Moon, Pure White, Stellar Grey, and Ocean Depths.
