X, formerly Twitter, is unleashing the power of private likes, giving users the freedom to heart content without the fear of public scrutiny. This feature, previously exclusive to X Premium subscribers, will now be the default for everyone.
Elon Musk himself chimed in, declaring the importance of allowing users to like posts “without getting attacked.” So, go ahead and double-tap that heart button without worrying about judgment from your followers.
But why the change? X’s director of engineering, Haofei Wang, explained that the move aims to protect users’ reputations,as many feel hesitant to like “edgy” content for fear of backlash. So, say goodbye to the Likes tab on profiles, and hello to a more private liking experience.
This shift aligns with a broader trend in social media, where like counts are becoming less relevant. In fact, Musk has reportedly wanted to ditch tweet action buttons entirely, focusing instead on post views. Some speculate this move is part of his desire to distance himself from Twitter’s legacy.
So, like away, X users! Your secret is safe with us (and Elon Musk, apparently). But remember, the more you like, the better the algorithm becomes at tailoring your feed. So, maybe those private likes aren’t entirely private after all…
