What’s new in iOS 26.5 RC ahead of public release

Apple has released the Release Candidate versions of iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5 to developers and public beta testers, signaling that the update is nearly ready for wider distribution. Carrying build number 23F75, the software focuses on messaging improvements, mapping enhancements, and minor polish rather than major new capabilities.

The most significant change is the addition of end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging. After years of relying on the outdated SMS/MMS fallback for cross-platform communication, Apple began supporting basic RCS in 2024. This latest step adds proper encryption for texts and media exchanged between iPhones and Android devices, provided the carrier supports it. Messages should now remain secure from interception in compatible scenarios, addressing a long-standing privacy gap that has drawn criticism since Apple first resisted RCS. Rollout will still be gradual and carrier-dependent, so not every user will see immediate benefits.

In the Maps app, a new Suggested Places feature surfaces recommendations drawn from recent searches and local trends. The groundwork for this appeared in earlier betas, along with code indicating potential sponsored local advertisements. While the feature could make discovery easier in unfamiliar areas, the introduction of advertising elements continues Apple’s careful expansion of monetization within its core apps. Users have grown accustomed to such incremental additions, but they also raise questions about how much curated suggestions might influence everyday navigation choices over time.

The update also includes a new Pride Luminance wallpaper as part of Apple’s annual Pride collection. The design dynamically shifts through a spectrum of colors, offering a subtle visual effect that some will appreciate as thoughtful seasonal customization. Alongside it come standard bug fixes, security patches, and general performance tweaks typical of point releases.

Registered developers and public beta participants can install the Release Candidate over the air through Settings > General > Software Update. Full restore images are available from the Apple Developer Center for those who prefer manual installation.

This release arrives amid Apple’s broader software cadence, where iOS 26 has already introduced several AI-focused tools and interface refinements. The emphasis here on messaging security and mapping feels pragmatic rather than revolutionary. Encrypted RCS closes a notable technical shortfall, yet it also underscores how Apple often moves deliberately—sometimes too slowly—on standards widely adopted elsewhere. The Maps changes reflect a familiar pattern: useful surface-level improvements paired with quiet infrastructure for future revenue streams.

For most users, iOS 26.5 represents steady evolution rather than transformation. It improves interoperability with Android without fully bridging the messaging divide, and it refines existing apps without overhauling the experience. As Apple prepares larger leaps in iOS 27, expected to deepen AI integration, releases like this one serve as important maintenance steps that prioritize stability and incremental privacy gains. The public version should arrive within days, assuming no major issues surface in final testing.
