After the US, the video-sharing application TikTok may soon face restrictions in Europe, as suggested by the European Commission’s chief.
TikTok is currently under investigation by two separate entities within the EU. Additionally, the US has passed a law that threatens to outlaw the app within nine months unless it is acquired by an American company.
As reported by Politico, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, has not dismissed the potential danger posed by TikTok, nor the prospect of banning it across the EU.
In a recent Maastricht debate with top contenders for the 2024 EU election, von der Leyen stated, “It is not excluded,” when asked about the situation in the US, where TikTok risks a national ban if not sold by ByteDance. She also mentioned that the Commission has already banned TikTok on its corporate phones, leading the way internationally.
“The hazards of TikTok are well understood,” she confirmed.
The EU is currently probing TikTok for possible infractions, including a marketing ploy that rewards users with gift vouchers for viewing videos. This practice may violate laws aimed at limiting app features that enhance compulsive usage, especially among minors.
