Threads, has rolled out an enhanced “hidden words” feature in the latest sign of the app’s aggressive development.
Threads initially offered users the ability to filter “unwanted content” within replies to their posts. This welcome feature has now evolved significantly. Now, users can proactively block specific words, complete phrases, and even emojis from appearing anywhere in their Threads experience. This powerful customization tool effectively allows users to create their ideal conversation environment. Once a term is added to the hidden words list, Threads automatically prevents it from appearing in the “following” and “for you” feeds, search results, replies to posts, and even user profiles.
This level of control distinguishes Threads from similar platforms by prioritizing user autonomy. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram (which oversees Threads), highlighted this value in his announcement about the update: “I hope these features give you more control over your experience on Threads and help keep it a place for positive conversation.”
Why Hidden Words Matters
Beyond user-defined content moderation, the hidden words feature offers other significant benefits:
- Protection against Spoilers: Entertainment fans can preemptively add keywords related to shows, movies, or books they haven’t yet experienced, helping avoid annoying spoilers.
- Mental Health Safeguard: Users can filter out topics or words that could be triggering, creating a safer and more comfortable social media experience.
- Targeted Content Creation: Creators and businesses can proactively hide certain words or phrases to maintain a specific brand identity or limit off-topic conversations.
What’s Next for Threads?
Adam Mosseri’s announcement hinted at even more upcoming features. He specifically mentioned the ability for users to control who can quote reply to their posts and the option to mute notifications on individual posts. Such features would align with the app’s philosophy of customization and personal space:
- Control Over Quote Replies: Currently, quote replies allow anyone to embed an original Thread into their own message, potentially adding new contexts or commentary. Giving users granular control over who can do this maintains the integrity of their posts and adds a layer of protection against unwanted misinterpretation.
- Muting Individual Posts: This feature would free users from the all-or-nothing approach to notifications. Instead of having to receive notifications on all Threads activity or none, users could manage the flow of information on a granular level. This aligns with the idea of Threads as a personal space with minimized distractions.
