Spatial computing on a budget: meet the Spacetop G1

Apple’s Vision Pro has undoubtedly made waves in the tech world with its spatial computing capabilities, allowing users to seamlessly integrate their Mac experience into augmented reality. However, the hefty price tag of $3,499 might leave some potential buyers seeking more budget-friendly alternatives.

Enter the Spacetop G1, a unique laptop from Israeli startup Sightful that aims to offer a similar spatial computing experience at a more affordable price of $1,900. However, this unconventional device comes with its own set of compromises and quirks.

Unlike the sleek, wireless Vision Pro, the Spacetop G1 requires a wired connection between its AR glasses and keyboard dock for the spatial display to function. While this may be a necessary trade-off for the current technology, it certainly detracts from the seamlessness of the experience.

Another notable difference is the Spacetop G1’s proprietary SpaceOS operating system, which might not be as familiar or versatile as Windows 11. Additionally, the G1 runs on an older Snapdragon platform compared to the newer Snapdragon X Elite powering Microsoft’s latest Surface Pro and other AI-enabled PCs.

In terms of aesthetics, the Spacetop G1 leaves much to be desired. Its design prioritizes the protection of the AR glasses and keyboard, but it lacks the elegance and visual appeal of Apple’s Vision Pro.

Despite these drawbacks, the Spacetop G1 represents an exciting step towards the democratization of spatial computing. It offers a glimpse into the future of AR computing at a more accessible price point, proving that Apple isn’t the only player in this emerging field.

For those willing to embrace its quirks, the Spacetop G1 is available for pre-order with a $100 reservation fee on Sightful’s website, with shipments expected to begin in October. While it may not be perfect, it’s certainly an intriguing option for tech enthusiasts eager to explore the world of spatial computing.

Check out all the details here, and reserve.
