Say goodbye to flat calls: Nokia debuts world’s first spatial audio call

Nokia is shaking up the phone call experience with their groundbreaking “immersive audio and video” technology. This innovation brings a whole new dimension to voice calls, creating a lifelike 3D sound experience that makes it feel like you’re in the same room as the person you’re talking to.

Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark, who witnessed the first 2G call back in 1991, proudly demonstrated this future of voice calls. Unlike traditional monophonic calls that compress audio and sound flat, this new technology delivers 3D audio, allowing callers to hear every nuance and detail as if they were present in person.

Jenni Lukander, president of Nokia Technologies, hails this as the biggest leap forward in voice calling since the advent of smartphones. The call, made to Stefan Lindström, Finland’s Ambassador of Digitalisation and New Technologies, showcased the technology’s potential to revolutionize communication.

While this technology isn’t yet widely available, Nokia is working towards standardization, paving the way for network providers, chipset manufacturers, and handset manufacturers to incorporate it into their products.

The immersive audio technology was demonstrated using a standard smartphone on a public 5G network. It has applications beyond person-to-person calls, with potential uses in conference calls where participants’ voices can be separated based on their location.

This innovation relies on the multiple microphones found in most smartphones, transmitting spatial characteristics in real-time to create a truly immersive experience. While it may take a few years for this technology to become commonplace,Nokia is already exploring licensing opportunities to make it a reality.

Get ready for the future of phone calls – it’s about to get a whole lot more immersive!
