Passkey portability is coming soon, simplifying passwordless security

The FIDO Alliance, a leading organization in authentication standards, has announced a major step towards a passwordless future. Draft specifications have been released that aim to standardize the secure exchange of passkeys between different providers, such as password managers and online accounts.

This means users will soon be able to easily move their passkeys between services without compromising security. Major tech companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Samsung are collaborating to ensure seamless implementation across various devices and platforms.

Why Passkeys Matter

Passkeys offer a significant security advantage over traditional passwords. They are resistant to phishing attacks and simplify the login process. With over 12 billion online accounts already utilizing passkeys, this development is poised to make the internet a safer and more user-friendly space.

Standardizing Secure Exchange

The FIDO Alliance has introduced two draft specifications to address the lack of a universal method for secure passkey sharing:

  • Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP): Defines the process for securely transferring credentials between providers.
  • Credential Exchange Format (CXF): Specifies the format for securely packaging credentials during transfer.

These specifications ensure that sensitive information remains protected throughout the transfer process.

Open Standard for Seamless Switching

Once finalized, these specifications will be openly available for credential providers to implement. This will empower users to securely and effortlessly switch between providers without the risk of exposing their credentials.

Community Feedback Encouraged

The FIDO Alliance is actively seeking feedback on the draft specifications, emphasizing that they are not yet finalized. Interested parties are encouraged to review the drafts and provide input through the FIDO Alliance’s GitHub repository.

This initiative represents a significant advancement in online security and user experience. By simplifying passkey management and enhancing portability, the FIDO Alliance is paving the way for a truly passwordless future.
