If you’re still using a second or third-generation Apple TV, it might be time for an upgrade. Netflix has announced that it will be ending support for these older models on July 31st, 2024.
While the exact reason for this decision is unclear, it is likely due to the age of the devices and potential codec compatibility issues. However, some Apple functions like Home Sharing, AirPlay, and Apple apps will still work on these models for the time being.
The second and third-generation Apple TV models were released in 2010 and 2012, respectively. They predate the App Store era of Apple TV and were effectively replaced by the fourth-generation model in 2015, which introduced tvOS and an App Store.
The latest Apple TV, released in 2022, marks the seventh generation of the device and is the third model capable of 4K resolution.
While these older models were once popular, with Apple selling 25 million units by 2015, their impending obsolescence highlights the rapid pace of technological advancement in the streaming device market.
