HMD’s first smartphone plays it safe… maybe too safe

HMD, the company behind recent Nokia-branded phones, is branching out with devices under its own name. Leaked renders of the “Pulse Pro” reveal a familiar, budget-friendly design that might leave those seeking innovation a bit underwhelmed.

Courtesy of 91mobiles and leaker OnLeaks (Steve Hemmerstoffer), we’re getting an early look at this device. While the specs aren’t terrible for a budget model (6.56-inch 720p display, Unisoc T606 processor, 6GB RAM, 128GB storage), the phone’s design feels like we’ve seen it a dozen times before. It’s a shame HMD didn’t take its chance to make a bold statement with this first release.

The Pulse Pro does boast a decent 50MP front and rear camera setup, making it a possible contender for selfie enthusiasts on a tight budget. However, rumors suggest a roughly $190 price point, which puts it squarely in a crowded, competitive market.

HMD has a chance to shake things up, especially with these phones reportedly coming to the US via Verizon. But, for now, the “Pulse Pro” seems unlikely to make a big splash. It’s a solid first attempt, but a bolder design would make it stand out from the crowd.
