Google Maps gets a makeover, here’s how it looks

Google Maps, once the undisputed champion of navigation apps, has been playing catch-up in recent years. However, the redesigned Google Maps unveiled at Google I/O 2024 could be a game-changer, breathing new life into the app.

The most noticeable change is the simplified interface, featuring a cleaner home screen with fewer tabs and a new bottom navigation bar. The three remaining tabs – Explore, You, and Contribute – offer a more streamlined experience, focusing on discovery, personalization, and user contributions.

Google Maps has also made navigation more intuitive. The map remains visible while using other app functions, eliminating the need to constantly switch tabs. A redesigned search field and improved placement of transport options further enhance the user experience.

The updated Google Maps introduces several quality-of-life features. A new sheet-based interface allows users to access information without the map taking over the entire screen. Closing sheets is also easier, and there’s a redesigned search field for directions.

These changes build on recent updates, like the enhanced list creation and sharing features introduced in March. Users can now easily create and share lists of places to visit, organized chronologically or by preference, and even link to social media content for reference.

Overall, the redesigned Google Maps feels like a breath of fresh air. The streamlined interface, improved navigation, and new features make it a more enjoyable and efficient app to use. While it may not have caught up to Apple Maps in every aspect, it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

Whether you’re a seasoned Google Maps user or someone who’s been tempted by Apple Maps, the redesigned app is worth checking out. It’s a much-needed refresh that could make Google Maps your go-to navigation app once again.
