Google is rapidly expanding Gemini’s capabilities, prioritizing its integration across its services. Despite initially lacking features like music playback, Gemini is catching up to Google Assistant. A recent YouTube Music extension now allows Gemini to play music, and hints in the Google app suggest a Spotify extension is in the works.
This Spotify extension, discovered by Android Authority, would enable Gemini to control playback, access playlists, and potentially even handle audiobooks and podcasts. The extension would require users to connect their Spotify account, allowing Gemini to manage their music library.
Like the YouTube Music extension, Gemini should be able to handle complex commands related to Spotify, such as searching for songs based on lyrics. However, it remains unclear whether Google plans to release similar extensions for other music services like Apple Music or Amazon Music.
Unlike Google Assistant, Gemini relies on an extension-based approach for third-party integrations. This could mean users might need to wait for Google to develop extensions themselves, unless the company opens up development to other companies.
