From tri-folding to solar-powered: MWC 2025’s most outlandish phones

Mobile World Congress (MWC) is the annual gathering where smartphone manufacturers unveil their latest and greatest creations. While many companies focus on incremental upgrades and refinements, MWC 2025 saw a number of brands pushing the boundaries of what a smartphone can be, showcasing truly unconventional and intriguing devices. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most bizarre and innovative phones that stole the show:

1. Infinix Zero Mini Tri-Fold: The Shape-Shifting Smartphone

Foldable phones have become increasingly common, but Infinix took the concept to a whole new level with the Zero Mini Tri-Fold. This device features not one, but two hinges, allowing it to fold in three sections. This unique design enables a variety of modes, including a standard smartphone, a hands-free fitness tracker that can be worn on the wrist, and even a wearable camera that can be clipped onto a backpack.

The Zero Mini Tri-Fold can also stand upright for video calls or watching videos, attach to handlebars for navigation while cycling, and even act as a selfie-assist tool. While still a concept, the Zero Mini Tri-Fold sparks the imagination and hints at the potential versatility of future foldable devices.

2. Tecno Spark Slim: Redefining Thin

Tecno’s Spark Slim challenges the notion that thin phones must compromise on features and battery life. With an incredibly slim profile of just 5.75mm, the Spark Slim manages to pack a 5200mAh battery and a large 6.78-inch 3D Curved AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate.

The phone also boasts a dual rear camera setup with 50MP sensors and a 13MP front-facing camera. While the Spark Slim is currently a concept, its combination of sleek design and impressive specs could make it a compelling contender in the ultra-thin phone segment if it reaches the market.

3. Nubia Focus 2 Ultra: The Smartphone for Photographers

The Nubia Focus 2 Ultra is a dream come true for photography enthusiasts. Featuring a massive 50MP sensor with an f/1.47 aperture, the phone takes inspiration from DSLR cameras with a physical rotating lens ring for manual zoom and filter adjustments. It even supports a detachable camera grip for a more comfortable and ergonomic shooting experience.

Priced at €299 (about $314), the Focus 2 Ultra offers a more affordable alternative to the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, which also features a camera grip but comes with a significantly higher price tag. This device caters to a niche audience that prioritizes a DSLR-like camera experience in their smartphone.

4. Infinix Solar-Powered Concept: A Glimpse into a Sustainable Future

Infinix’s solar-powered concept phone showcases the potential of sustainable energy in mobile devices. Unlike previous attempts at solar-powered phones, this device utilizes perovskite solar cells, which are thinner and more efficient than traditional silicon-based panels. It also features Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) technology to optimize energy harvesting without overheating.

While the 2W charging capability is not enough to fully replace conventional charging methods, it could provide valuable emergency top-ups during outdoor activities or in situations where access to electricity is limited. Infinix also introduced a solar-charging phone case, adding a practical application for the technology.

The Future of Mobile Innovation

These unconventional phones showcased at MWC 2025 demonstrate that smartphone innovation is not just about faster processors and better cameras. It’s also about exploring new form factors, functionalities, and technologies that can enhance the user experience in unique and unexpected ways. While some of these concepts may never reach the market, they serve as a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of smartphone manufacturers and offer a glimpse into the exciting possibilities that lie ahead for the future of mobile.
