Corning, the maker of Gorilla Glass, is introducing a new product called Gorilla Glass 7i. This glass is designed for mid-range and affordable smartphones, aiming to bring enhanced durability to a wider market.
Gorilla Glass 7i is touted to withstand drops from up to 1 meter onto rough surfaces like asphalt and is twice as scratch-resistant as comparable alternatives. It was developed with sustainability in mind, aligning with the increasing use of high-quality displays on mid-range phones.
The need for 7i arises from the fact that many new devices still use older versions of Gorilla Glass, like Gorilla Glass 5 from 2016, or even Gorilla Glass 3 from 2013. Corning and its partners recognized the demand for a modern glass solution that caters to more modest budgets while still offering improved protection for larger, higher-quality displays prevalent in today’s mid-range phones.
Oppo is set to be the first company to launch a smartphone featuring Gorilla Glass 7i, with more details expected to be revealed soon. While primarily intended for phones, 7i is also suitable for other devices requiring scratch and fall-resistant glass, such as smartwatches.
